What is SEM & SEO?

TSearch Engine Marketing (SEM) describes the paid search activities your business undertakes. Some of the most common terms associated with SEM activities include paid search advertising, pay-per-click (PPC), and cost-per-click (CPC).
On the other hand, SEO, which stands for Search Engine Optimisation is the art of ranking highly on search engine results pages (SERP) in the unpaid section.

The difference

Put simply, the most significant difference between the two is that SEM is paid for and SEO is organic or unpaid. Other differences include how they work and where they appear.

SEM involves paying for your ads to appear on a search engine, most commonly Google, when a user searches particular keywords you are targeting. The benefit to you is that you are only charged when someone completes the action you desire such as a view, click, or goal. Paid search ads typically appear at the top and or bottom of the page and can be found on almost any search. RetailMotion smashes industry averages by increasing your PPC visibility and decreasing CPC and cost per conversion, achieving superior results.

SEO requires optimising your brand’s content across varying channels to build a sustainable online business and to increase your chance of being the top result on a SERP such as Google or Bing. There are two types of SEO, on-page, and off-page. On-page SEO involves more than just your website design and development; it includes your URL structure, meta information, content including text, images and video, keywords, and much more. Off-page SEO consists of the elements that live elsewhere, that is outside of your domain. From the sitemap to link building, to social media and page speed, off-page SEO is equally important.Relevant, easy-to-read, and navigate content is rewarded with higher rankings and therefore increased traffic. SEO is crucial for transforming your business as search is the #1 driver of website traffic.

So what should you do?

When it comes to the two, they often work hand-in-hand with SEO laying the groundwork for your SEM. However, the objectives your business has set out to achieve may influence your decision to focus on one more than the other.

When to focus on SEM
  • Creating your brand’s initial online footprint.
  • Increasing brand awareness and leads.
  • Designing a conversion-focused campaign (ads are typically linked to landing pages).
  • Shorter-term solution for a fast spike in revenue.
When to focus on SEO
  • Establish search credibility
  • Increase domain authority
  • Seeking a cost-effective long-term marketing solution
  • Stay ahead of your competitors

RetailMotion shows you precisely how we use your money to grow your business. We don’t believe in ‘set and forget’. We are consistently working on your SEM and SEO to weed out non-performing keywords, maximise brand exposure, and investigate new revenue streams, improving your overall business in a measurable way.
